Mention Them
Wednesday. A reasonably cool day, this day. I understand it hasn't gotten any cooler east beyond the hills where most of my coworkers live, but I'll not dwell on that. I have become a city boy in the my old age, not because I like to get out and whoop it up and add to the local excitement, but because I like to walk down the way on weekend mornings to have a leisurely breakfast over the paper and walk down the way (occasionally) in the evenings for sushi and sake. That and the ten minute bus trip or a thirty minute walk to work. That and the fact I still occasionally wake up from a nightmare in which I'm a teenager again living in that strange yet familiar suburb of New York City that radiates a fearful form of dread. Life is strange, but I don't have that dream very often. MRE suggests I'm in a rut. Well yes, that's the idea, is it not?
People sometimes suggest it's good to occasionally play with novelty and to get out of one's comfort zone.
Except nobody believes it or there wouldn't be such things as large corporations because none of the little worker bees like me would stay at their jobs. Novelty leads to unexpected travel, lumpy beds and sleep depravation. I myself am feeling pretty tired, perhaps due to the heat this last week; sleep not being sleep at these temperatures. Then again it could be the reptile creatures that drift after dark through my apartment. I originally thought of them as lost spirits, of the dead perhaps, tied to this building somehow in an earlier existence, but they have long reptilian claws you can see in the shadows so I've taken to thinking of them as reptile creatures; inhabitants, perhaps, of some other dimension.
They kept me awake, at first, for obvious reason, but since they've never seemed to be interested in interacting with their surroundings (I being a part of their surroundings) I decided not to worry. Still, maybe they've had something to do with my sleep this last week. Maybe the heat irritates them. Maybe, at some level, I'm edgier as I'm sleeping and seven or eight hours doesn't add up to seven or eight hours anymore when your watching for shadows.
You sure you didn't suffer a little heat stroke this afternoon?
I guess I haven't mentioned the reptile creatures before. Didn't seem important somehow. That and the fact I get strange looks when I mention them.
