Anything Anymore
Wednesday. I keep forgetting there's a local business club that has breakfast every Wednesday at my usual café with speakers who extol whatever it is they're selling to the members. Which means a monologue as you're eating and reading, but such is life. It has its little monologues in the middle of the comics section. Life is like that. And sometimes breakfast.

Overcast again, as it has been every day now for weeks. Which is nice, the high level fog comes in from the ocean in the evenings cooling everything down and the sun comes out in the late mornings to try, but not quite fry the afternoons. It's not “perfect” weather, but in the hands of a good promote your state marketing organization it's a close second. We are happy here, really, even if it looks a bit gloomy outside at the moment.

Later. A walk in the late morning for about half an hour down and around the neighborhood, checking out the construction still well under way at the end of the lake, a photograph taken leaving and a photograph taken returning of something or other. It's always good to run into something or other with a camera.

Another walk (what can I say?) down to the bus stop, a ride downtown, a trip to a jeweler's to replace the battery in my watch, something that needs to be done every six months or so and costs ten dollars. I've generally gone to this particular store in Chinatown and they always look at me quizzically when they tell me it will cost ten dollars. Do you really want to spend ten dollars for a watch battery? I've bought them before at a big Rite Aid store, ten dollars there as well, so I know I'm not being overcharged, but I always get the same quizzical look and I've always nodded yes: yesterday, today and, I suspect, tomorrow.

The watch, as you may have suspected, does contain a small digital camera, something I haven't looked at or used in years, but it also displays nice large readable numbers. I like nice large readable numbers.

So the day is now evening, I've had two good walks, each of which left me tired but satisfied. How about this drive up to Portland I've been talking about, suggesting a couple of times I might be leaving today, Wednesday? Well, I think I'm looking at Friday morning now and still plan to take at least two days, maybe the full three days for the journey.

You sure you won't just grab the wheel and drive straight through as you've done in the past?

It's difficult to be sure of anything anymore.
