Oakland

Friday. Lights out again after the six minute NPR News at ten last night, to fall asleep reasonably quickly and wake up at six-ten. Which is about right, if you don't include the two times I opened my eyes and looked at the clock at five-thirty and five forty-five. Briefly glanced at the clock, blinked and I was back to sleep, no complaints.

Clear skies and bright sun walking to breakfast, the restaurant open when I arrived just before seven. The plain waffle with sliced bananas and strawberries, fruit cup and coffee this time because, well, we were two pounds over on the scale this morning. And I was in the mood for the waffle and fruit.

Some interesting analyses of the coat Melania Trump was wearing when she visited a Texas migrant holding center, the back of her jacket with I really don’t care do u? written across the back. The stories had a fairly comprehensive discussion of the possible motivations and rationales she or her staff may or may not have used in making that particular choice, a choice they must have known would dominate the news. No one will ever know, unless she starts talking, but again, an interesting analysis of a move made by people very familiar with how the choice to wear something like this would have on the news cycle. What does it all mean, Mr. Natural? Who really knows?

And so the usual walk back to the apartment, the sun still very bright and now warmer, but not yet too warm wearing what I call my lighter weight winter jacket. Nice day, nice walk, nice breakfast on a Friday in June.

Later. It did get warm out there, a high of eighty degrees the weather site is saying, although it's been cooler here inside, no need to turn on the fan. We'll see if that holds tomorrow.

Seymour Hersh's book Reporter, a Memoir arrived with the mail this afternoon and so I started reading, curious after listening to an interview with Hersh on Democracy Now!. I may have mentioned my book reading has fallen close to zero these last few years.

Groan.

The first six chapters give an idea of what it was that got him into becoming a reporter, what it takes to become a good reporter in finding news sources, in understanding how to dig out information and such in the journalism world of the sixties and seventies, skills and drives I've often wondered if I had inside when I considered majoring in Journalism in college. A question this book, the first chapters of this book, perhaps have helped answer. But that's for another life in a long ago world.

Evening. Lights out again by ten. Not much time on the tablet this time, nothing on television I wanted to watch and so more reading to wind up what's been a pretty good day, I'd say, here in Oakland.
