Makes Me Feel Good I fired up the computer this morning and the DSL line was working. I uploaded yesterday's entry as I was running the bath and letting the cat out. Works fine this evening as well. I'm able to receive email from both of my ISP accounts and send email through Pac Bell.
Evidently I have email, news and space for a web site
This is going to suck me into all kinds of adventures, I think. I'll want to hook up the webcam server I currently have pointing at a vacant lot across the street on Broadway (Pretty hot stuff, don't you think? The old hit counter just jumps like crazy.) and set it up here at the apartment, since I have 24 hour connectivity. (24 hours a day broadcasting pictures of the cat sleeping at the foot of the bed is too much to comprehend.) I'll probably set up an NT server and a Linux box to play with as well. Thank god I'm lazy and procrastinate. This is going to take years. What does this mean for ISPs like my current one? I have "A Personal Site" and "NBBC" on line with DNAI, a local ISP. I've been very happy with their service and their technical support. They charge $25 per month for an account, but they're good, they're fast and they give me lots of space for my domain. They don't have some of the hit analyses I've seen on other sites such as Rien Post's in The Netherlands. I don't look at who is or isn't hitting my site very often just because it's cumbersome to download a log file and view it in Word. Lots of data that's hard to read. Still, DNAI and the rest have competition now from a monster corporation that wants their customers and maybe a little blood. I'm no fan of the phone company. I moved my pitiful little long distance account to MCI years ago when it first became available, not to save any money, but to stick it to Ma Bell. Now Ma Bell is fighting back. What's next? Unlimited wireless access? Surf the net from anywhere on the planet with your Palm Pilot, $10 per month? Yeah. I suspect. Enough of toys. I had three people wish me a happy birthday with email messages that I've met through this journal. That's nice. Makes me feel good. |
