I Think I'm Done Scientific American and the Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette arrived today along with the usual coupons and fliers. I still enjoy Scientific American, mostly for the articles on the physical sciences, but I don't read it with great attention any more. They changed their format a while back, running a number of short pieces with pictures, just a few hundred words on recent work, discoveries, science in the news, that sort of thing. Maybe I'm not the only guy out there having problems with my attention span. Don't read the magazines that come in except for little bits and pieces, don't read books anymore, although I've been following some of the book lists I've found on journal sites (who knows?) and I can't watch television most of the time because it either sucks or its pretty good, but with more minutes of advertising than story line. I think that just means I have to find other things to occupy my time. Everybody else has gone to cable, I suppose, and maybe the programing is better there. I mean, why not? I have some horrendous number of phone lines coming in here to support the computers and the Net, yet I won't subscribe to one of the cable lines. I'm trying to think. I had cable once in Napa, but then I went through a lean stretch and couldn't make the payments. Adios cable. A similar experience with the credit cards, although their owners were much less pleasant. Yet I won't subscribe now that I can afford it. Not sure why. I've got another credit card, but I keep it clean. Well, pretty clean. Let's see how much photography I can do in the evenings when the light stands arrive. I need material for this web page. I'll be curious how that works out, after I've shot the first dozen rolls of film, for example, and I need to scratch a little bit harder to find new subjects. I have a PhotoShop class coming up week after next, the tag from the school listing the date and address is taped to the window sill in front of my desk. I assume I'll have to do some real work to keep up and maybe that will provide some stuff for this journal. I hope so. I'm lazy, but I get the job done when I'm pushed. You have a whole new attitude when you're writing the check (or putting it on your credit card). Tonight to bed by ten. I lose an hour or two of sleep and I'm tired. Picked up the laundry this evening, so the sheets are fresh and crisp. Sounds nice. I can hear them, calling softly from the darkened room, and its having its effect. I think I'm done. |
